On January 10, 2009, four male missionaries and four female missionaries arrived in Maputo, welcomed by the bishop, Msgr. Francesco Chimoio. They settled in the Cumbeza neighborhood, on the outskirts, and began to organize a new parish. On December 27 of that year the parish dedicated to the Holy Trinity was established.
The territory of our mission has been very large since the beginning, covering 80 square kilometers, including both urbanized and rural areas, and counting about 70,000 inhabitants. The missionaries have spent time to know the reality of the area and meet the local people, starting with celebrations in six chapels of the mission. The first missionary group composed of young people attending the missionaries activities was born in 2010.
Neighborhood groups, usually called “cores”, are where Christians gather to build relationships of faith, prayer, mutual help, and Christian fraternity. Accompanied by the missionaries, this group of 45 has grown to 125 in the last 10 years.
The young people of the missionary group and the parish visited areas of the parish bringing a joyful announcement of faith.
Visits and activities at local prisons started in 2014. The Workshop of Freedom was first organized to offer the possibility of redemption to young prisoners, in view of their full reintegration into society.
The children who live in the territory of the mission have to deal with very serious school-related difficulties. In 2014 we started to organize after-school courses for them, and later a feeding program was established in 2016. Medical assistance and support for families are also ensured to the beneficiaries and their caregivers.
The House was opened for the reception and rehabilitation facility for former prisoners committed to reintegrating into their families and societies.
The first part of the House of Hope was completed - a structure where school support courses are provided for children and vocational training is available to adults.
Ten years after the establishment of the parish dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the population of the parish had grown to exceed 200,000 people. The small neighborhood communities of the parish, which were initially 45, increased in number becoming more than 120. Celebrations and formative activities, time after time, had increased considerably, and the number of catechumens too was constantly growing.
