Discovering My Vocation: A Testimony of Faith and Service to the Community

Anselmo, missionnaire du Mozambique

The inspiring journey of Anselmo Chivale, a young man from Mozambique who found his mission in consecrated life and love for others

My name is Anselmo Chivale. I’m from Mozambique, and I’m 26 years old.
I come from a Catholic family that has always been present in my life, instilling in me the deep values I carry today. Growing up in an environment of faith planted a desire in me to seek something greater and find a deeper meaning in life. This longing led me to religious vocation, and today I am undergoing formation within the Missionary Community of Villaregia (CMV). Through this journey, I’ve found not only my mission but also a spiritual family that helps me grow in my relationship with God and in my vocation.

How My Vocation Began to Awaken

Discovering my vocation was both unexpected and transformative. At the age of 15, an apparently ordinary event sparked something special in me. At home, we used to watch TV series, and one day a particular character caught my attention: a priest devoted to his community, a figure of wisdom and love who helped others overcome their struggles with empathy and compassion.

I immediately felt a connection. I was deeply moved by how he dedicated himself to others’ well-being, which awakened in me a desire to pursue a path of service and commitment to others. From that moment on, I started thinking that consecrated life might be my true calling. This feeling grew within me, turning into a strong vocation and a clear direction for my life.

What Attracts Me Most to Consecrated Life

Consecrated life touched my heart deeply, offering me the chance to build an intense and genuine relationship with God. However, what drew me most was the opportunity to serve others with true, unconditional love. Through this vocation, I can dedicate myself to my community and work to help those in greatest need. This selfless love for others has become the foundation of my choice and the driving force that keeps me moving forward on this path.

My Family’s Reaction and My Mother’s Role

When I decided to embrace consecrated life, my family’s initial reaction was marked by doubt, especially from my mother, who worried about the challenges this path might bring. However, she always wanted me to be happy, and despite her initial reservations, she became my strongest supporter.

I recall the words of my paternal grandfather, who, when giving me my name, told my mother: “May my grandson’s future be happy, no matter which path he chooses.” These words had a profound impact on both me and my mother. She began to see my vocation as something destined and offered me unconditional support. This family backing has been essential, allowing me to follow this path with peace and determination.

Challenges Along My Vocational Journey

The vocational discernment process wasn’t easy and came with many challenges. I experienced moments of uncertainty, especially as I wasn’t sure how to channel my desire to serve. I often questioned whether I was truly on the right path.

Before joining the Missionary Community of Villaregia, I took part in a vocational experience within my diocese, but it was a difficult time. I felt disappointed and unsure, questioning whether religious life was really meant for me. However, God opened a new door when a priest accompanying me spiritually invited me to try another community.

When I joined CMV, I finally found my place. It felt like all the pieces of the puzzle came together. I found strength in the community to continue my journey and the certainty that I was on the right path. Today, I can confidently say that I’ve never been happier or more fulfilled.

Transformative Experiences with My Family and Vocation

One of the most significant experiences during my vocational journey was when my father fell ill. During this challenging period, I was able to offer support and love to my family, taking on a role of protector and strength in moments of weakness.

This experience helped me realise that vocation isn’t limited to religious service but extends to how we care for those closest to us. Feeling my vocation in action while supporting my family was a revelation that strengthened my commitment. It made me understand that God calls me to be a witness of love and service in every aspect of my life.

Consecrated Life’s Missionary and Community Dimension

Today, I live my vocation with joy and gratitude. In my community, I’ve learned that fraternity and mission are fundamental aspects of our calling. Living with my brothers and sisters teaches me to embrace communal life, share, and welcome others with their uniqueness.

Each person in the community has a unique mission in God’s plan, and together we work to bring love, light, and hope to those in need. Community life comes with challenges, but it is where I learn patience, openness, and growth in my mission. Each day is an opportunity for renewal and service, strengthening my faith and commitment.

Advice for Young People Feeling Called to Consecrated Life

To any young person feeling a call to consecrated life, my advice is to be courageous. The first step is to nurture your vocation through prayer and reflection. Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from someone experienced who can help you in your discernment.

Fear is natural, but remember that God never asks anything of us without giving us the strength to fulfil it. Trust in God and offer yourself to Him with your whole heart. The path may be challenging, but with faith and perseverance, you will discover a life full of joy and fulfilment. Don’t be afraid to take that step — in God’s hands, everything becomes possible.
