How I Discovered My Vocation to Consecrated Life: Marius’ Testimony

vocation

Marius, a missionary in training, shares his vocational journey from Burkina Faso to Côte d’Ivoire

My name is Marius, and I would like to share the journey that led me to embrace the consecrated life. My story is that of a young man driven by the desire to serve God and others, and I hope it may inspire those who feel a similar calling.

The Beginnings of My Calling

It all started in 2014, the year I received my First Communion. That moment planted a seed in me—a desire to become more involved in the Church. At the time, I was hesitant, and I set that thought aside. However, by 2016, when I was in primary school (CM2), this feeling became much stronger.

Joining the group of altar servers brought me great joy. I had a naïve belief that becoming an altar server could be a first step towards priesthood. This idea fascinated me, and I decided to fully commit to serving the Church.

Encouragement and Self-Questioning

Significant events strengthened my desire. My history and geography teacher nicknamed me “Abbé Grégoire,” a name that stuck with me for several years. Additionally, joining a youth missionary group in 2018 gave me an opportunity to reflect deeply on my vocation.

By the time I reached high school, my attraction to consecrated life intensified. I felt a strong inner calling to proclaim the Good News, serve God, and help my neighbours. However, I was worried about speaking openly about this desire.

Confirmation of My Calling

One day, while serving during Mass, the celebrant asked me a question that echoed in my heart: “Have you ever considered consecrating your life to God?” It felt like God’s response to my inner questions.

Around the same time, I attended a retreat with the youth missionary group, which focused on discernment. This retreat provided me with great comfort and helped me feel more certain about my calling.

As I continued along this path, I experienced profound spiritual growth. Each day felt like a gift from God— a chance to become the best version of myself by modelling my life on Christ. The Word of God began to shape my thoughts, behaviour, and interactions with others.

Joining the Missionary Community of Villaregia

In my discernment, I felt called to consecrate my life as a missionary within the Missionary Community of Villaregia. This decision led me to leave Burkina Faso and continue my formation in Côte d’Ivoire. It was a significant milestone in my life, allowing me to fully embrace my missionary commitment and discover new cultures.

Challenges and Support

My family’s support was vital, although their approval was not always steady. Some friends encouraged me, while others expressed concerns. To handle these mixed reactions, I asked God for the grace to discern well. His Word and Providence reassured me throughout the journey.

Embracing the consecrated life has not been without doubts. I feared not being capable enough or failing in my mission. I also worried about my family’s well-being. However, these obstacles were overcome thanks to spiritual readings, the guidance of my spiritual director, and the support of formators, community members, and loved ones.

Community Life and Mission

For me, living in a religious community means being part of a family united by the desire to serve Christ and others. I take an interest in the lives of my brothers and sisters, and I believe that every contribution within the community is essential to our collective growth.

The missionary aspect of my vocation has broadened my perspective, allowing me to discover new peoples and cultures. Living in Côte d’Ivoire has been an enriching experience, helping me carry out the mission entrusted to us by Christ:

“Go into all the world and preach the Good News to all creation.” (Mark 16:15).

My Fulfilment and Advice to Others

I find fulfilment in dedicating my time and energy to serving others. Consecrated life enables me to live out God’s purpose for me fully. Through this vocation, I have discovered the true meaning of my existence: to be a light for myself and for those around me.

To those feeling called to consecrated life, I offer the following advice:

  1. Listen to your heart.
  2. Speak with a spiritual guide.
  3. Open your heart to others.
  4. Deepen your relationship with God.
  5. Allow yourself to be shaped in the image of Christ.
  6. Remember that only God is perfect.
  7. Find joy in following Christ’s mission.
  8. Communicate: share your experiences and listen to others.
  9. Read the stories of saints or the foundations of religious congregations to understand the joys and challenges they encountered.

Conclusion

My journey towards consecrated life in the Missionary Community of Villaregia has been filled with doubts and fears, but also with immense joy and divine confirmation. I am grateful for every step that has led me to where I am today in Côte d’Ivoire, and I pray that other young people will find their own paths according to God’s will.
